Director Known for Poor Video Game Adaptations Reveals ‘Unofficial Sequel’ to House of the Dead After 23 Years

Uwe Boll, the filmmaker who made a name for himself with notoriously poor adaptations of popular video games, is back in the spotlight. Known for titles like Alone in the Dark, BloodRayne, Postal, and Far Cry, Boll had promised to hang up his director’s hat after 2016’s Rampage: President Down. However, he’s now teasing a comeback with the announcement of 23 Years Later — The Castle of the Dead, an “unofficial sequel” to his 2003 disaster, House of the Dead.

According to reports, Boll’s return to filmmaking is sparked by Paul W. S. Anderson, another director infamous for his lackluster video game adaptations, including Resident Evil and Monster Hunter. Add Christophe Gans, the mind behind Silent Hill and its sequel, to the mix, and you’ve got a recipe for cinematic chaos.

It turns out Anderson has already begun production on a new official House of the Dead film in partnership with Sega. Boll, feeling slighted, expressed his disdain, stating, “When I heard that Paul Anderson is rebooting House of the Dead, I immediately knew that it would be a soulless CGI orgy. And I want to do a completely different zombie movie: Bloody, gory, and handmade.”

Interestingly, Boll’s reference to “Paul Anderson” might be a mix-up; perhaps he’s confusing him with Paul Thomas Anderson, the acclaimed director known for films like Boogie Nights and There Will Be Blood. Maybe he even thinks Daniel Day-Lewis, who recently came out of retirement, will star in this new project.

And let’s not overlook this gem from the report: “Boll is keeping the plot of the new film under wraps but said 23 Years Later will be set in a castle.” Uwe, my dude… the film is literally titled 23 Years Later — The Castle of the Dead. Did you think you were dropping a major reveal? This just in: Sonic the Hedgehog 4 director Jeff Fowler has confirmed that the upcoming film will feature a hedgehog.

Unfortunately, the news doesn’t stop there. Boll has also secured the film rights for another Alone in the Dark project from THQ Nordic, and his action film Citizen Vigilante, starring Armie Hammer, is already in post-production. It sounds like a parody, but sadly, it’s all too real.
