The director of the Thai-inspired animated film from a major studio has shared insights on why the project was ultimately canceled.

Animator Mat Braly took to social media to explain that after two years of hard work, he received the disappointing news that his film would not be moving forward. “At the very start of 2025, I learned that the movie I had been developing for over two years would not be produced,” Braly stated. “The film was deemed not commercially viable.”

He also shared visuals from the project, which you can view along with his full statement.

Braly expressed his disappointment that fans won’t get to see the film but acknowledged that such decisions are complex, adding that he respects the studio for its commitment to producing quality films.

The untitled project was announced in 2023 and was set to follow a boy navigating the realm of Thai spirits to heal before a significant operation. The story was inspired by Braly’s own experiences with chronic illness. He noted, “It was a deeply personal narrative for me, as I was diagnosed with an incurable chronic illness at a young age, which changed my life permanently.”

Braly, known for his work on the Cartoon Network series Steven Universe and the Netflix film The Mitchells vs. the Machines, had completed the script with fellow animator Rebecca Sugar. The duo hopes that another studio might take on the project. Braly concluded, “I’m looking to make a strong comeback this year and will be announcing something exciting tomorrow. Stay tuned!”
