Director of Lone Survivor and Friday Night Lights takes on a new WWII epic for Netflix.
On Wednesday, Netflix unveiled the first trailer for *The Mosquito Bowl*, an upcoming World War II film directed by Peter Berg, known for his work on films like *Lone Survivor*, *Deepwater Horizon*, and *Friday Night Lights*. Before he takes on a *Call of Duty* adaptation set for 2028, Berg is diving into *The Mosquito Bowl*, which draws inspiration from the book of the same name by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Buzz Bissinger.
The trailer highlights the journey of former college football stars who transition from the excitement of stadiums to the grim realities of the Pacific Theater.
The film’s logline states:
After the attack on Pearl Harbor, four of America’s top college football players put their fame on hold to join the Marines. As they gear up for the fierce invasion of Okinawa, they participate in a legendary game featuring some of the greatest players in history — a game that will be the last for many.
Berg’s adaptation is rooted in Bissinger’s historical fiction novel, *The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II*, which recounts the real-life Mosquito Bowl, a football match between the 4th and 29th Marine Regiments held at Guadalcanal on December 24, 1944. This game showcased some of the nation’s top college football talents, many of whom would go on to play in the NFL.
Tragically, several players from that game lost their lives during the Battle of Okinawa.
The film features Nicholas Galitzine (from *Masters of the Universe*) as John McLaughry, Bill Skarsgård (from *It*) as Bob Baumann, Ray Nicholson as Tony Butkovich, and Tom Francis as David Schreiner. Peter Berg, who previously adapted *Friday Night Lights* for the screen, will co-write and direct *The Mosquito Bowl*. Collaborators from *Friday Night Lights*, Brian Grazer and Explosions in the Sky, are also on board for this project. The film is set to hit theaters on October 30 and will stream on Netflix starting November 25.
In addition to *Friday Night Lights*, Berg has directed *Lone Survivor*, *Patriots Day*, *Hancock*, and the notorious box-office flop *Battleship*. He has been chosen by Paramount to helm a live-action *Call of Duty* film, slated for 2028. Interestingly, Berg has previously criticized war-themed video games like *Call of Duty*, labeling them as “pathetic” and suggesting that players exhibit “keyboard courage.” The film adaptation will be co-written by *Yellowstone* creator Taylor Sheridan, which could lead to a level of jingoism that would make even Teddy Roosevelt raise an eyebrow.
It’s packed with intensity, and by intensity, I mean pure adrenaline.
