Discord mistakenly bans over 8,000 users for sharing harmless images like grids.
Discord has acknowledged a glitch in its safety system that led to the wrongful banning of over 8,000 accounts since May. This admission comes after a surge of user reports claiming they were banned for sharing images featuring grid patterns, including chessboards, game textures, and even Minecraft inventories.
Stanislav Vishnevskiy, cofounder and chief technology officer of Discord, noted that the bug affected around 200 users who posted “grid-like” images, along with the 8,000 who shared “other benign images” since May 2026. He confirmed that all affected accounts have now been reinstated.
In a discussion on X, Discord explained that its safety system flags content by comparing it to known harmful material. However, this system can generate “false positives,” which typically prompts a staff review of the flagged content. Unfortunately, due to the glitch, instead of just temporarily restricting the account from uploading during the review, the system mistakenly issued permanent bans.
Discord clarified that when staff reviewed and cleared those accounts, the same bug prevented the bans from being lifted automatically, leaving them in place.
