Disney Announces New Adaptation of the ‘Artemis Fowl’ Series, Described as ‘Die Hard with Fairies’

Disney is set to bring the action-adventure fantasy series Artemis Fowl to Disney Plus with a new animated show, as announced by creator and author Eoin Colfer at New York Comic Con. This animated series, based on Colfer’s “Die Hard with fairies” concept, has been approved for both Disney Channel and Disney Plus, promising to explore the characters and lore of the beloved book series in greater depth.

The story centers on Artemis Fowl, a 13-year-old prodigy who discovers a hidden world filled with high-tech, armed fairies. In his quest to save his ailing mother, Artemis devises a plan to harness fairy magic.

Colfer shared this exciting news during the 25 Years of Artemis Fowl panel at NYCC, where he will also take on the role of executive producer for the animated series. He will be joined by Emmy and Annie Award winner Ben Juwono, known for his work on Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur and Big Hero 6: The Series, along with Colleen Evanson from DuckTales and Monsters at Work, who will also serve as executive producers.

“For over two decades, Eoin Colfer’s ‘Artemis Fowl’ books have enchanted readers globally with their unforgettable characters, imaginative world-building, and thrilling adventures,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family. “Bringing this cherished franchise to life as an animated series allows us to introduce a new generation to Artemis’ world while honoring the long-time fans who have loved these stories for years.”

“I am proud and delighted to be part of the formidable team that is putting the ‘Artemis Fowl’ animation on screen,” Colfer expressed. “Everyone is so talented and so positive that I feel certain the fairy world is in excellent hands.”

The first Artemis Fowl novel debuted in 2001, and Colfer has since published 11 books in the series, along with a short story and a companion book. The series has sold over 35 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 48 languages. Disney previously adapted the books into a live-action film that was released directly to Disney Plus in 2020, but it received largely negative reviews and has since been removed from the platform.

As of now, there is no announced release date for the new Artemis Fowl animated series.
