Disney Confirms a Glee Reboot is in the Works

Somehow, Glee is making a comeback. After Ryan Murphy spent a good chunk of his recent press tour for his FX series The Shards discussing his desire to reboot the beloved musical comedy-drama, it’s officially happening. On Wednesday, Disney and Hulu confirmed that the Glee reboot is in the works, bringing back the cherished TV franchise after more than ten years.

The show’s social media account shared the exciting news with a post stating, “Currently gleeking out,” along with an image that confirms Glee’s return. Speculation about this revival began back in July when Murphy mentioned, “So many young people now watch it. And I’m like, ‘Maybe we should revisit that show.'” Shortly after, he revealed to another outlet that he had completed a script for the Glee reboot.

While the official announcement didn’t dive into specifics, we do know that Murphy will be involved. The reboot is being produced by 20th Television, the same studio behind the original series. However, details about the project’s direction remain unclear. The original Glee aired for six seasons from 2009 to 2015 and became a cultural phenomenon, despite often being labeled as cringeworthy. The show featured a talented cast, including Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Chris Colfer, Naya Rivera, Dianna Agron, Jane Lynch, Darren Criss, Matthew Morrison, and Heather Morris, among others. Sadly, several original cast members have passed away since the show ended.

Although the reboot is still in its early stages and Murphy has kept much of the details under wraps, he did share some insights during a conversation with another outlet. “I’ve been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members. It’s very sweet, and they all had a lot of questions, but they all were very enthusiastic about the idea.” This hints that the new series may not be a complete reboot but could continue the story from where the original left off, potentially featuring some familiar faces.

Behind the scenes, Murphy will be joined by other series veterans. Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, who co-created the original series with Murphy, are also involved in writing the reboot, indicating they are likely on board now that the series has been greenlit. With the cancellation of Schmigadoon!, theater enthusiasts have been craving a new show that speaks to them, making the Glee reboot a welcome development for many fans.
