Disney Plus Cancels Live-Action Reboot of Gargoyles, Leaving Fans Disappointed

Attempts to revive the beloved ‘90s animated series Gargoyles seem to be as jinxed as the stone-turned-heroes themselves, who were trapped in a magical slumber for a millennium. Series co-creator Greg Weisman recently revealed that a planned live-action adaptation for Disney Plus has been scrapped, leaving the future of this cult classic uncertain.

Gargoyles aired from 1994 to 1996, emerging alongside a wave of kids’ animation that featured complex characters and narratives, similar to Batman: The Animated Series and X-Men: The Animated Series. The show was notable for its serialized storytelling, starting with a five-part introduction to the nocturnal guardians who turn to stone by day. Their story unfolds in Manhattan, thanks to the machinations of the quirky billionaire David Xanatos, who transformed a Scottish castle into a towering skyscraper.

While Batman: The Animated Series has found new life with Batman: Caped Crusader and X-Men: The Animated Series is being revived as X-Men ‘97, Gargoyles has yet to make a return to the screen. The latest reboot attempt, which did not involve Weisman or the original team, altered the narrative by making Goliath the last gargoyle instead of the leader of the remaining clan. This version had Goliath on a quest to uncover his past while teaming up with NYPD detective Elisa Maza, leaning more towards a supernatural police procedural rather than the genre-blending Shakespearean drama that defined the original series.

Recently, Disney has been scaling back its streaming initiatives, canceling shows like Wonder Man after just one season and halting plans for a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot. However, there may still be a glimmer of hope for Gargoyles. Brent Spiner, a familiar voice from the original series and a fellow cast member from Star Trek: The Next Generation, hinted at a new animated series in the works during an August podcast appearance alongside Frakes.
