Divinity Enthusiast Unravels Ancient Runes to Uncover Game’s Antagonist
Divinity is the upcoming title from Larian Studios, the creators of the critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3, and interestingly, it marks the seventh installment in the Divinity series. The game was first teased during The Game Awards 2025 with a mysterious statue, now identified as the hellstone, set in the Mojave Desert. So far, we’ve only been treated to a three-minute cinematic trailer.
Fast forward seven months, and content creator WolfheartFPS claims to have uncovered a hidden message within the reveal. The trailer kicks off with an elderly man bound in chains, barbed wire encircling his head, and visible wounds across his body. He sports a spiky crown adorned with cryptic symbols.
Recently, 3D animation and visual effects studio Unit Image released a behind-the-scenes video showcasing their collaboration with Larian Studios on the cinematic trailer. This video provides a closer look at the model of the man, highlighting the intricate details of the symbols on his crown.
Wolfheart suggests that these symbols are derived from Elder Futhark, an ancient writing system used during the Migration Period (300-600 AD). This oldest known runic alphabet is named after the sounds of its first six runes, which correspond to F, U, Th, A, R, and K.
Deciphering Elder Futhark can be challenging due to its phonetic nature, but Wolfheart believes he has decoded the runes on the man’s crown to read “chaos is coming,” or more specifically, “kay oss iz kum ing.”
In the lore of Divinity, the Lord of Chaos is known as the creator of demons and is believed to be imprisoned in Tartarus, the game’s interpretation of hell. Following the cinematic trailer, a popular theory suggests that Divinity will center around chaos, especially given the hellstone’s presence and the trailer’s chaotic imagery.
While there’s no official release date for Divinity yet, similar to Baldur’s Gate 3 and the previous two Divinity: Original Sin games, it’s likely that it will first launch in early access.
There’s much more to Divinity than just chaos and mayhem.
