Divinity is an all-new RPG that welcomes newcomers, but fans of Original Sin and its sequel will have an edge.

What a thrilling year it’s been for gaming! The Game Awards 2025 wrapped up last night, celebrating numerous well-deserved victories for developers and offering glimpses of exciting new titles. One standout announcement was for Divinity, an RPG in development by Larian Studios.

Divinity has officially been confirmed (and no, it’s not Divinity: Original Sin 3), putting to rest the cryptic hints from The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley. The game looks absolutely stunning, featuring fiery sacrifices, a fantastical setting, and some wild scenes. Larian Studios’ lead, Swen Vincke, has called it “our biggest, most ambitious RPG yet,” stating it’s “the Divinity we’ve always wanted to make.” The best part? You don’t need to have played previous entries to enjoy it.

If you’ve experienced Baldur’s Gate 3 but haven’t touched Divinity: Original Sin or its sequel, you’re in luck. You can dive into the new Divinity without any prior knowledge of Larian Studios’ RPGs. According to a recent press release, this upcoming title is “a brand-new game that doesn’t require experience with previous Larian titles.” However, players familiar with the earlier games will likely appreciate the references and continuity.

“Those who’ve played Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin 2 will be able to enjoy greater understanding and continuity,” the note adds. So, if you’re like me and have spent countless hours in Baldur’s Gate 3 but haven’t explored the Divinity series yet, you can confidently jump into Divinity when it launches. Of course, you could also take some time to catch up on Larian Studios’ lore.

Keep in mind, though, we probably have at least a year to wait until Divinity arrives. The new trailer shown at The Game Awards was just a cinematic teaser, and the developers have another project in the works, codenamed Excalibur. It’s unclear what direction that game will take or if it will release alongside Divinity, but given the scale of the latter, it seems unlikely.

Looking for something to play while you wait? There are plenty of fantastic games to check out this year!
