Divinity is expected to follow in the footsteps of Baldur’s Gate 3 by launching in early access, offering players a unique experience.
After the Game Awards 2025 unveiled thrilling new titles, including Larian Studios’ highly anticipated RPG entry in the Divinity series, fans are buzzing with excitement about when they can dive in. Fortunately, the wait might not be as long as expected, thanks to plans for early access.
Baldur’s Gate 3 and its impressive early access journey are still fresh in my mind, especially as a fan of Larian’s work. Before that, we had Divinity: Original Sin and its sequel—two RPG masterpieces that also enjoyed successful early access launches. It’s no surprise that Larian intends to follow this proven path with their new Divinity game, aiming to kick things off with early access on Steam to gather valuable feedback from the community.
Larian’s founder, Swen Vincke, shared insights during a recent interview, emphasizing the importance of early access. “We still want to do early access,” he stated. “It’s been the blueprint, especially the community participation with early access, which is what interests us. It was [with] Divinity: Original Sin 1, Divinity: Original Sin 2, Baldur’s Gate 3 – the community members were a large part of how we developed the games.”
Reflecting on the impact of early access on their previous titles, he noted, “The games improved massively through early access. Players being invested in it increases the pressure and their participation in it, so you get something really cool out of that process—even if it’s painful for the developer. So, we have to swallow our pride and say, ‘Ok, you guys are right, we’re wrong, we accept it, you’ve made your point.'”
Vincke wrapped up by acknowledging the extra effort required but reaffirmed that it ultimately leads to a better game, which is the primary goal. It’s hard to argue with him—Baldur’s Gate 3 stands as a testament to the success of early access, having launched in 2020 and fully releasing in 2023 to widespread acclaim and numerous awards.
Here’s hoping that Divinity will indeed enter early access first, allowing us eager fans to experience it as soon as possible. I know I’ll be eagerly counting down the days until the new Larian adventure arrives.
