Divinity: Original Sin 2 Launches on Current-Gen Consoles, Hinting at Connections to Upcoming Divinity Title

Over a year after receiving its rating and just days after unveiling the latest installment in the franchise, Larian Studios has launched Divinity: Original Sin 2 on current-gen consoles.

Baldur’s Gate 3 catapulted Larian into the spotlight as a must-watch developer, reminiscent of the rise of CD Projekt Red following The Witcher 3. Recently, it was announced at The Game Awards 2025 that the next title will be a new entry in the Divinity series. This has sparked renewed interest in the previous games, particularly Divinity: Original Sin 2, which has long been a favorite among RPG enthusiasts.

Larian has made it even more enticing, as they have confirmed that the Definitive Edition of Divinity: Original Sin 2 is now available for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and Nintendo Switch 2, over a year after it was rated by PEGI.

For those who already own the game on PS4, Xbox One, or the original Nintendo Switch, the upgrade is completely free—except for players in Japan, where it costs 100 yen on PS5 and Switch 2.

Even with the new title on the horizon, Larian emphasizes that playing Original Sin 2 isn’t necessary to enjoy the upcoming Divinity game. They noted, “Divinity will offer a completely new story, but there’s some continuity and characters for those who’ve played previous games. You might even pick up on certain things others may not!”

While the trailer and FAQ didn’t detail specific new features in these editions, it appears that the previous console versions were capped at 30fps, and the trailer showcases a smooth 60fps. The Nintendo eShop page mentions, “The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition version of Divinity: Original Sin 2 has a higher resolution and provides a smoother experience with increased framerate,” so those hoping for mouse control on the Switch 2 will be disappointed.

Additionally, this confirms that Larian has access to Nintendo Switch 2 development kits, which hints at exciting possibilities ahead.

The Divinity series has seen a surge in Steam players following the RPG reveal at The Game Awards, reigniting interest in Larian’s earlier titles.
