Donald Glover Takes on the Role of Yoshi in the Super Mario Galaxy Film
During a recent Nintendo Direct, Nintendo and Illumination unveiled the final trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. This new glimpse at Mario and Luigi’s upcoming adventure appears to be even grander than 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, but it was the casting announcements that truly captured attention.
One of the standout reveals is Donald Glover taking on the role of Yoshi, the beloved dinosaur. Traditionally voiced by Kazumi Totaka, a long-time musician and composer for numerous Nintendo titles, Glover’s involvement adds significant star power to the film. Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri noted that Glover is a “Nintendo super-fan.”
Joining Glover in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie are Luis Guzmán as Wart and Issa Rae as Honey Queen, described by Meledandri as the “imposing ruler of the Honeyhive Galaxy.”
The latest trailer also confirms the return of Lumalee, the fan-favorite nihilistic Lum who became a breakout character in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. This time, Lumalee takes on a new role as a prison guard, showcasing a darker side.
In this sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach confront a new threat from Bowser Jr. and his father, who has returned to his normal size. The heroes are joined by newcomers Rosalina and Yoshi, as the story expands the Super Mario cinematic universe beyond Brooklyn and the Mushroom Kingdom. Meledandri hinted at more character reveals to come, promising “some big surprises and some very small.”
Returning cast members include Chris Pratt (Mario), Anya Taylor-Joy (Peach), Charlie Day (Luigi), Jack Black (Bowser), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad), and Kevin Michael Richardson (Kamek). New additions to the franchise are Brie Larson as Rosalina and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set to hit theaters on April 1.
