Don’t Expect Answers to God of War’s Horn Mystery in the Upcoming Spin-Off

God of War: Laufey is the next major entry in the God of War series, shifting the spotlight from Kratos to Faye, his deceased wife, as she endeavors to assist him and their son Atreus from the afterlife. Given the game’s timeline and Faye’s mission, many fans are eager to see if Laufey will finally shed light on one of the franchise’s most enduring mysteries. However, the director of the upcoming spin-off is being quite tight-lipped about whether any answers will be revealed.

To provide some background: in God of War (2018), there’s a pivotal moment when Kratos carries a sick Atreus to Freya’s hut, and they hear an offscreen horn that summons Jörmungandr, the colossal World Serpent residing in Midgard’s Lake of Nine. The game acknowledges the horn’s sound but never discloses who blew it or the reason behind it. This mystery remains unsolved in the sequel, God of War: Ragnarok, leaving fans hopeful that Faye might be the one responsible. But don’t hold your breath just yet.

In a recent interview, the director of Laufey, Ariel Lawrence, was asked directly about the horn mystery and whether the spin-off would “move forward the discussion” on this topic.

“That is a very good question,” Lawrence replied. “I am not at liberty to discuss. I think that’s a very exciting question for folks to dig into.”

This kind of non-committal response is typical when inquiring about pre-release games. However, a more intriguing part of the interview came when Lawrence was asked if he feels any pressure to reveal the identity of the horn blower.

“I don’t think people understand how stubborn [God of War creative director] Cory Barlog can be,” Lawrence noted. “So we may be waiting a while.”

The interview also revealed that the actress portraying Faye, Deborah Ann Woll, was likely informed about the spin-off plans during the development of Ragnarok or even earlier.

“Deborah and I have talked about that, and she was like, ‘I’ve had to keep this under wraps for, I don’t know, what is it, 8, 10 years at this point,’” Lawrence shared, adding that Barlog was meticulous about casting Faye during the development of the 2018 game, as God of War: Laufey has been a “twinkle in his eye for a while.”

Additionally, Lawrence mentioned that Barlog and others at the studio have long-held ideas about the afterlife for the gods and what that might entail.

“I won’t go into all the details, but I can tell you we’ve been killing gods for a really long time. So we’ve been thinking about this question,” he said. “I think this concept of the place beyond has been in Cory’s brain for a long, long time.”

So, it’s possible that the mystery of who blew that horn will finally come to light. Or fans might find themselves waiting a few more years for an answer. It certainly seems like Barlog is in no rush.

God of War: Laufey is set to launch sometime in the future on PS5.
