Don’t Forget: Kratos Is All About His Family

In the latest chapter of God of War, Laufey takes center stage, showcasing Kratos’ wife, Faye, in a prominent role. Naturally, this has sparked a wave of backlash from a segment of the gaming community, who are using it as an opportunity to air their misogynistic views, all while claiming to defend Kratos, whom they feel has been “sidelined” by modern sensibilities. While we won’t dive deep into that line of thinking, it’s amusing to see the reaction to Faye being recognized as a formidable character worthy of her own spotlight, especially considering how Kratos has consistently celebrated her in both the 2018 reboot and 2022’s Ragnarok. He’s definitely a devoted husband, even beyond the grave.

It’s ironic that some fans are rallying for Kratos by disparaging his wife, when he would never allow anyone to disrespect her. In God of War, their son Atreus discovers his divine heritage and quickly lets it inflate his ego. He becomes arrogant and dismissive, even making a hurtful comment about Faye not being a god. Kratos remains silent but remembers this moment, later refusing to let Atreus carry her ashes. Atreus insists he’s just stating facts, but Kratos counters that she was “better than a god” and that belittling her is a “dishonor” to her legacy.

Kratos isn’t alone in honoring Faye’s strength and influence. Sindri and Brok, who crafted the ice-powered Leviathan Axe that Kratos wields, speak of her with admiration and grieve her loss deeply.

Mimir also shares tales of her bravery, describing how she spent her life “making a nuisance of herself in the most noble of ways,” much to the chagrin of gods like Thor.

Overall, the characters in God of War hold Faye in high regard for her strength and kindness, making the complaints about Kratos not being the main focus in this installment feel particularly misplaced and tone-deaf. It almost seems like there’s something deeper motivating these reactions.
