Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen Welcomes Beloved Director for Major Expansion

Capcom has revealed that Kento Kinoshita will be directing Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen during the June 25 Spotlight showcase. Kinoshita previously helmed the 2013 release of Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, which was an enhanced version of the original 2012 title that solidified the RPG’s status as a cult favorite.

Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen was first unveiled just weeks ago at the June 2026 Nintendo Direct. This upcoming release will expand on the 2024 game, introducing quality of life improvements and fresh content. A key highlight is the new snowy region called Norgan, which will feature an original storyline and unique enemies. Additionally, the Dark Arisen version will bring in the Relic Expedition, allowing players to craft new weapons and armor with various class skills, enhancing customization options. Players can also look forward to twelve challenging dungeons known as Last Rites, which will be integrated into the base map for those seeking to test their skills.

Much of the footage and information shared during the Spotlight showcase reiterated details from the initial announcement of the expansion. The real surprise was Kinoshita’s appointment as director. Previously, both Dragon’s Dogma and its sequel were directed by the renowned Hideaki Itsuno, who has been a pivotal figure in nearly every Devil May Cry title. After over 30 years with Capcom, Itsuno departed the company in September 2024, and in November, it was announced that he would lead a new studio in Japan under LightSpeed Studios, the developers behind PUBG Mobile.

Kinoshita took the reins for the Dark Arisen version of the original Dragon’s Dogma, which also refined the base game and added a significant new area. While the 2012 release garnered a dedicated fanbase, it was the arrival of Dark Arisen that truly elevated Dragon’s Dogma to cult classic status. Kinoshita’s return as director for Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen reassures fans that the expansion is in capable hands.

In a brief and somewhat enigmatic statement, Kinoshita hinted at what players can expect in the new expansion. He mentioned the Fallen Dragon, the presumed foe players will be pursuing, and Eir, a character featured in the trailer who is also on the dragon’s trail. However, he kept most story details under wraps.

Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen is slated for release on October 9. In the meantime, Capcom is rolling out free updates for the base game. A June 10 update introduced the Eternal Ferrystone item, which significantly eases fast travel across the game world. Future updates will eliminate certain microtransactions and add more save slots in preparation for the new Dark Arisen.
