Dropout’s New Project Features Voice Talent from Spider-Verse and Amphibia

Dropout is diving headfirst into a new experimental phase. Over the last few months, the comedy streaming platform, previously known as CollegeHumor, has rolled out a series of fresh initiatives. These include a “pay more if you want to support us” Superfans pricing tier, their first-ever Blu-ray release (seasons 1 and 2 of Game Changer, which sold out almost immediately), and a 24/7 streaming channel that captures the “always-on” vibe of traditional cable. In February, Dropout secured its first licensing deal for the quirky puppet show Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared, and in March, it marked its first crossover with a non-Dropout series, featuring CEO and Game Changer host Sam Reich alongside regular contestants Jacob Wysocki, Zac Oyama, Vic Michaelis, and Anna Garcia appearing as themselves on the ABC police procedural The Rookie.

So, what’s on the horizon? It looks like an original series of short-form cartoons is in the works, showcasing animation from a diverse group of creators. The company has announced the commissioning of 25 independent animated shorts, set to be released biweekly under the banner Toonout. The teaser hints at a nostalgic “Cartoon Network, but, like, back when it was cool” vibe.

Currently, Dropout hosts several animated series. The gross-out educational cartoon WTF 101 parodies The Magic School Bus and similar shows, where a teacher magically whisks a class of delinquents around the globe to uncover horrifying truths about nature and history. Cartoon Hell follows two animators who meet their demise right after signing a deal with the devil, only to find themselves producing an animated series in hell. Troopers: Animated tracks the misadventures of hapless stormtroopers on the Death Star. However, all these series were produced by CollegeHumor. Toonout will be the first animated series created since Dropout launched in 2018.

While the announcement doesn’t delve into specific storylines for the shorts, it does reveal some of the talented animators involved:

The first six episodes will feature animation from Raj Brueggemann (Big City Greens, Twelve Forever), Victor Courtright (Co-Executive Producer of Thundercats Roar and Aquaman: King of Atlantis), Jonathon Wallach (Big City Greens), Kay Hayes (Monsters at Work, Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure), Violaine Briat (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse), and Matt Braly (Creator of Amphibia).

Toonout is set to launch on March 24, with new episodes dropping every other Tuesday.
