Duffer Brothers Reveal Their Take on Eleven’s Fate Post-Stranger Things Season 5, But Fans Remain Skeptical
In a surprising turn of events, the fifth season of Stranger Things left fans questioning the fate of its main character, Eleven. Despite various fan theories, the show’s creators, the Duffer brothers, along with star Millie Bobby Brown, are the only ones privy to the true outcome for the super-powered heroine.
Spoiler alert: the following discussion contains major spoilers for episode 8 of Stranger Things season 5, so make sure you’re caught up before diving in.
After a fierce battle with Vecna and ensuring her friends’ safety, Eleven makes the ultimate decision to sacrifice herself to prevent the military or anyone else from opening a gate to the Upside Down. As Hopper’s explosive device detonates, Eleven steps into the gate, seemingly meeting her end while her friends look on in horror. However, later in the episode, Mike Wheeler suggests that Eleven might not be dead after all, theorizing that she escaped while Kali projected an image of her inside the gate.
In a conversation with Josh Horowitz on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, the Duffer brothers emphasized that leaving Eleven’s fate ambiguous allows viewers to interpret it in their own way. When asked for their personal take, Matt Duffer remarked, “This is ambiguous. You’re writing from a perspective of understanding the truth and reality,” adding that revealing their thoughts would diminish the impact of the ending.
Millie Bobby Brown is also in on the secret, as Matt Duffer noted, “She’s not going to tell you either… Millie swore herself to secrecy.” Ross Duffer even mentioned that he advised Brown not to share the details with her close friend Noah Schnapp, who has a history of leaking show secrets. “I said, ‘Don’t tell Noah,’ and she said, ‘Of course not.’ She knows better,” Matt Duffer explained, acknowledging their affection for Schnapp but also their lack of trust regarding show-related secrets.
So, what’s the real story? While it appears that Eleven died in the finale, if Mike’s theory holds true and what we witnessed was merely Kali’s projection, she could still be alive. However, this theory has its flaws, as one fan pointed out on Twitter, questioning how Kali could create an illusion if she was already gone. Others noted that even if Kali were alive at that moment, she would have been killed by the explosion before reaching Eleven. It seems we may never receive a definitive answer.
