Dune 3 IMAX Tickets Are Being Resold at Outrageous Prices on eBay

Dune: Part Three is set to hit theaters on December 18, but eager fans can catch it early in IMAX starting December 14 with exclusive insider screenings. Pre-sale tickets went live on August 18, and despite the premiere being months away, they’ve nearly sold out, making it tough for regular fans to snag a seat for these premium showings. Scalpers acted quickly, buying up tickets in bulk, leaving many fans facing inflated prices on the resale market.

AMC’s CEO, Adam Aron, noted that the demand for Dune 3’s IMAX screenings exceeded all expectations. Traffic on their website and app surged to about three times the levels seen during the ticket launch for another major film. Despite Aron urging fans to keep trying for tickets, the online system struggled, and bots managed to scoop up hundreds of tickets, which were then resold almost immediately.

To complicate matters, scalpers have been hitting local theaters to grab even more tickets. In New York City, one scalper was spotted buying 80 tickets at once, with a disgruntled fan capturing the moment as the scalper displayed his haul. This could easily lead to significant profits, as listings for Dune 3 screenings in NYC have been seen going for over $150.

The community is rallying to combat scalping by reporting these listings to AMC, as reselling tickets above face value breaches their terms of service. If any listings include specific seat numbers, theater names, or screening times, AMC has the authority to cancel them. While this isn’t a foolproof solution and may just free up tickets for other scalpers, it could deter some from continuing their practices.

Scalping has plagued the entertainment industry for years, and it seems to be worsening, impacting everything from concerts to collectibles and movie screenings. Casual fans are finding it increasingly difficult to enjoy their favorite pastimes. Even kids are affected, as scalpers target items like McDonald’s Happy Meal toys. This issue has escalated to the point where facial recognition technology is becoming essential to curb scalping and protect genuine customers.

Will Dune face the same fate as the Avengers?
