Dying Light Spin-Off Won’t Launch on PS4 Due to Insufficient Processing Power and Memory
Dying Light: The Beast made its debut last year on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with plans to eventually launch on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. However, those plans have been scrapped, as developer Techland announced that bringing the game to older consoles would require too many compromises. Players who pre-ordered the game on those platforms will be refunded.
On July 14, the official Dying Light Twitter account shared an update regarding the previously announced PS4 and Xbox One versions of The Beast, a spin-off/sequel that reintroduced the main character from the original game when it launched in September 2025. Unfortunately, the news was disappointing for those still holding onto a PS4.
“After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision that Dying Light: The Beast will no longer be released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One,” Techland stated.
“The game was designed from the ground up to leverage the capabilities of current-generation hardware. Its expansive open world, enhanced visuals, and smooth combat and traversal rely on processing power and memory that older consoles simply can’t provide. As development progressed, it became evident that porting the game to those platforms would necessitate compromises that would hinder the experience we aimed to deliver.”
Techland emphasized that this decision was not made to abandon PS4 or Xbox One users, but rather reflects the “technical realities of development and our commitment to providing the best possible experience.”
As mentioned, refunds will be available for players who pre-ordered the canceled versions of The Beast. It also seems likely that future Dying Light titles will not be released on PS4, which isn’t surprising considering the console will be 13 years old this November. Expecting new games to launch on PS4 in 2026 is akin to hoping for a 2012 game to be available on PS1. With rising console prices, many players may find it difficult to upgrade, making this news even more disappointing.
“We know many of you were looking forward to playing on PS4 or Xbox One,” Techland expressed. “We sincerely apologize for the disappointment this causes. Anyone who was expecting to play on either platform will be eligible for a refund. Thank you for your understanding and continued support.”
