EA Confirms Upcoming Game Releases Despite Recent Cancellations and Layoffs: “We Remain the Top Publisher in Western HD Gaming”

Two months after its historic sale to Saudi Arabia, Electronic Arts is revamping its gaming lineup and laying off 400 employees as part of its first major round of cuts post-acquisition. A detailed plan was communicated to staff in a joint email from chief studios officer Cam Weber and chief operating officer David Tinson, outlining which games will continue to receive support and which are being phased out. Notably, the next installment of Mass Effect is being shelved, while Star Wars Battlefront 3 is moving forward.

The email emphasized EA’s position as the leading publisher in Western HD gaming, highlighting the need to adapt to a rapidly changing industry landscape. With players facing more choices than ever and competition on the rise, EA’s leadership identified key areas for growth beyond its traditional markets and business models.

After a thorough review of the business, EA established three strategic priorities. The first involves making tough decisions about projects they are passionate about to focus on what is already successful. The second aims to expand their reach to players in regions like Asia. The third is to innovate new ways for fans to engage with sports. This shift raises questions about the future direction of the company, particularly regarding the transition from Mass Effect to potential sports gambling apps in China.

The email also detailed specific projects moving forward. The most notable cancellation is the upcoming Mass Effect game, which coincides with the closure of BioWare after nearly three decades, affecting around 50 employees, or about 12.5% of the layoffs.

Additionally, EA is scaling back the Skate team at Full Circle. The email stated, “For Skate, we’ve had a lot of success in bringing players into the game, and we need to create an experience that keeps them engaged over the long-term. To do that, we are making changes to the studio to have a more focused, smaller team to deliver on a very clear roadmap for our community that we believe will build a healthier and more sustainable business.”

The Sims is also undergoing changes, with development on “Project Lotus” being paused. Instead, Maxis will focus on “Project Evergreen” for The Sims to allow the team more time to realize the game’s full potential. Weber and Tinson noted, “Our responsibility is to make the choices, provide the clarity, and create the conditions for our teams to do their best work. We also want to give every game we choose to build its best chance to succeed for our players and fans around the world.”

While EA is no longer accountable to shareholders, it must address the substantial debt incurred from the $55 billion buyout. Reports indicated that EA was targeting $700 million in annual cost reductions, including $170 million in organizational efficiencies. The recent cuts reveal part of the strategy to manage these financial obligations, but further reductions are likely on the horizon.
