Echo Isle: A Mini Adventure Drawing Inspiration from Classic Zelda
Echo Isle draws heavily from the spirit of The Legend of Zelda, showcasing its influences with pride. The retro visuals evoke memories of Link’s Awakening, featuring a protagonist clad in a blue tunic wielding a sword as he explores dungeons, collects items, and battles bosses for magical treasures. What sets Echo Isle apart is its ability to distill the essence of a Zelda adventure into a compact experience—I completed the game in just over an hour.
The journey begins with the main character plummeting from the sky onto Echo Isle, an island shrouded in mystery after its protective lighthouse has gone dark. You start without any gear, but it won’t be long before you discover a sword, launching you into the classic Zelda gameplay loop: exploring the world, tackling dungeons, and using newly acquired items to progress.
To capture that nostalgic feel, each screen in Echo Isle is designed as a square, not only paying homage to classic games but also creating a focused and inviting experience as you navigate the island and its dungeons. The compact text boxes require dialogue to be concise, a feature that more games could benefit from.
This emphasis on simplicity extends throughout the game. The overworld map consists of just 25 tiles, featuring a single village and four dungeons, culminating in a tower that serves as a traditional boss rush. While there’s no fast travel, the map is small enough that you can traverse it in just a few minutes.
You’ll find four additional pieces of equipment, clearly inspired by Link’s Awakening. I was thrilled to discover the game’s version of Roc’s Feather in the first dungeon, allowing me to jump around just like I did in the Game Boy Zelda titles of my youth. Bombs are available, but Echo Isle simplifies resource management by eliminating ammo and currency concerns. The only thing to monitor is your health bar, and thankfully, there are plenty of pots to smash for hearts.
By streamlining the experience, Echo Isle pays tribute to the best elements of a Zelda game without feeling like a mere copy. In an era where many games are bogged down by sprawling worlds filled with tedious filler, it was a breath of fresh air to immerse myself in Echo Isle’s polished, compact universe. Best of all, I managed to complete most of it while enjoying my morning coffee.
Echo Isle is now available on PC.
