Elder Scrolls 6 Fans Can Breathe Easy: Xbox CEO is a Supporter!
After years of Todd Howard hinting at The Elder Scrolls 6 in the most ambiguous ways, the most exciting update has surprisingly come from Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. On August 11, Sharma shared on her X account: “Live playthrough of The Elder Scrolls VI: ******** this morning. The scale and grandeur are incredible. The story is even greater.” While brief, her words have certainly sparked excitement among fans, and they hint at the game’s full title.
Since taking the helm at Xbox, Sharma has made efforts to win over gamers by pledging to “recommit to our core Xbox fans and players.” She reduced the price of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and paused the integration of Copilot AI into Xbox consoles and apps. However, much of the goodwill she built up was overshadowed in July 2026 when Xbox announced a major restructuring that led to 3,200 job cuts. Bethesda Softworks, the studio behind The Elder Scrolls series, was also impacted, but theoretically, this shouldn’t hinder the development of The Elder Scrolls 6.
Sharma’s post likely aimed to reassure fans that this highly anticipated title is still progressing. Bethesda is also focused on its other major franchise, Fallout, with Fallout 5 currently in preproduction, but The Elder Scrolls 6 remains the studio’s primary focus. Now, fans can speculate about what the full title might be.
The redacted word in Sharma’s post, later echoed by Bethesda’s own account, consists of eight letters. With the exception of the first game, The Elder Scrolls: Arena, all titles have been named after locations within Tamriel (or outside it, as in the case of Oblivion). This has led fans and lore enthusiasts to theorize about the mysterious eight-letter word. The Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages, a prominent online source for Elder Scrolls lore, shared an intriguing list of possibilities on its X account:
Among the suggestions, my personal favorite is Sentinel, the capital city of Hammerfell, one of the regions rumored to be featured in the game. Dominion would also make for a catchy title, referencing the Aldmeri Dominion, the powerful elven alliance that has stirred up trouble in Tamriel in recent installments.
Regardless of the final name, it’s evident that Xbox is heavily investing in The Elder Scrolls 6. The company faces two significant challenges: stabilizing its finances and maintaining the loyalty of its player base. A new masterpiece from Bethesda could address both issues, but there’s a catch: The Elder Scrolls 6 isn’t expected to launch anytime soon. Recent reports suggest the game is still at least two years away, and the layoffs have undoubtedly impacted the developer. An anonymous Bethesda employee expressed concerns that the current team might be “replaced by cheaper, contracted labor,” leading to further delays and potential crunch time to meet deadlines.
Can a game boasting “incredible scale and grandeur” be rushed through development to save Xbox? Only Asha Sharma and Todd Howard hold the answer.
