Official reviews of the new adaptation of Wuthering Heights are in, and the romantic drama is sparking mixed reactions among critics.

As of now, Wuthering Heights holds a 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which isn’t too shabby. However, this marks the lowest score for director Emerald Fennell, whose debut, Promising Young Woman, scored 90%, while her 2023 thriller Saltburn received a 72%.

The film, which reinterprets Emily Brontë’s classic novel, has drawn criticism, with some reviewers unhappy with Fennell’s approach. “This is Emily Brontë reimagined by Lord Flashheart,” remarked one critic, while another noted, “It feels overly forced, like a cheap romance novel brought to life, struggling to mask the erasure of Brontë’s more intricate themes regarding societal constraints.”

Others argue that Fennell failed to capture the necessary intensity, with one reviewer comparing Wuthering Heights to “a jumbled mix of teenage desire and rebellion, better suited for a high school locker than a cinema.” Another critic described the film as “emotionally flat and perhaps hesitant to embrace boldness,” similar to Fennell’s previous works.

Conversely, some critics are praising the film for its audacious interpretation of the cherished tale. One reviewer described Wuthering Heights as “a visual and auditory delight that, while at times frustrating, resonates with the emotional depth Brontë intended,” while another called it a “sexy, exhilarating, and visually stunning adaptation.”

Margot Robbie’s performance is receiving acclaim, with one critic noting, “What Robbie brings to the role is a palpable sense of longing. Such a character can often come off as either cruel or completely passive.”

Set in 18th-century England, Wuthering Heights tells the story of Heathcliff (Jacob Elordi), an orphan taken in by a wealthy family, who falls in love with their daughter, Catherine Earnshaw (Robbie). However, when Heathcliff returns years later, tragedy ensues for the star-crossed lovers.
