Epic Mickey enthusiasts received an exciting Disney Plus announcement at D23.
Disney is set to revive Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, the character that predates Mickey Mouse, with a new miniseries launching on Disney Plus in February 2027. This announcement came during the recent D23 showcase, where Jon Favreau revealed the project, marking a significant moment for the character after more than two decades since Disney regained the rights.
Originally created by Walt Disney, Oswald was lost to obscurity because Disney did not own the rights. This led to the rise of Mickey Mouse as the company’s flagship character. In a surprising turn of events in 2006, Disney reacquired Oswald by trading ESPN sportscaster Al Michaels to NBCUniversal. This deal paved the way for Oswald’s return to the spotlight.
Oswald made a notable comeback in the video game Epic Mickey, where he starred alongside Mickey Mouse in a whimsical adventure through forgotten Disney realms. He also appeared in the sequel and a remaster released in 2024, but aside from these, he has mostly been seen in brief cameos or references in various Disney Animation projects. Now, he’s getting his own miniseries.
Titled simply Oswald, the three-part series will combine live action and animation, reminiscent of Coyote vs. Acme. The storyline follows Oswald as he escapes into the real world after an earthquake and teams up with a group of middle school kids to explore a world he hasn’t seen in a century.
Favreau, known for his work on the first two Iron Man films, Elf, and The Mandalorian, is at the helm as writer, co-director, and producer. The cast includes Kathryn Hahn, along with Ryder Allen, Albert Brooks, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Mykal-Michelle Harris, and Al Madrigal.
Oswald is set to debut on Disney Plus on February 17, 2027, nearly a century after his first appearance in the animated short Trolley Troubles. In the meantime, Epic Mickey Rebrushed will be making its way to iOS and Android on September 16, followed by a release on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 6.
