Epic War Game Adaptation of Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive in the Works
Brandon Sanderson is nearing completion of the screenplay for his Mistborn film, marking the first adaptation of the renowned fantasy author’s work as part of a significant deal he struck with Apple earlier this year. This collaboration encompasses his entire Cosmere universe, with plans for his Stormlight Archive series to be developed into a TV show.
While these adaptations are still in the pipeline, fans can look forward to another way to dive into Sanderson’s expansive world next year. Stormlight: War for Roshar, an epic asymmetric board game designed by John D. Clair from Mystic Vale, is set to launch on Kickstarter this fall. Players will take on the roles of heroes and villains from the series, including Dalinar, Kaladin, Raboniel, and Taravangian, as they engage in the conflict between the Knights Radiant and Odium’s forces. The game is being published by Brotherwise Games, known for their previous adaptations of Sanderson’s works like Mistborn: The Deckbuilding Game and The Cosmere Roleplaying Game.
“War for Roshar captures the scale of action of the books perfectly,” said Brotherwise CEO Chris O’Neal. “John has designed a game that allows players to perform heroic actions with the main characters while also influencing the strategic landscape with armies and diplomacy.”
War for Roshar can be played in various formats: one-on-one, in teams of two, or three against one. Each game unfolds over eight rounds, influenced by the movements of the Everstorm and Highstorm—weather phenomena tied to the two factions. Players must balance their attention between upgrading their leaders, deploying units, recruiting neutral allies, contesting territory, and utilizing powerful action cards. The objective is to control Oathgates, which can transport armies across the world of Roshar, while also pursuing secondary goals. Designed to appeal to both Sanderson enthusiasts and strategy gamers, it promises a level of complexity akin to Star Wars: Rebellion or the Lord of the Rings board game War of the Ring.
The Kickstarter campaign will feature the base game, deluxe components, and a Champions mini-expansion. Additionally, Brotherwise will offer miniatures inspired by Mistborn and the Stormlight Archive for the Cosmere tabletop RPG.
