Avengers: Secret Wars is just around the corner, promising an epic conclusion to the Multiverse Saga and Marvel Phase 6. While the specifics remain under wraps, we anticipate some explosive moments.

Before that, Avengers: Doomsday will pave the way for Secret Wars, setting up an epic clash between universes. The connection between the two films is still a mystery, but we’ve compiled all available information, along with hints from comics and directors Joe and Anthony Russo that may shed light on the plot of Secret Wars.

Read on to catch up on everything we know about Avengers: Secret Wars as we prepare to dive into the Marvel Multiverse one last time.

Avengers: Secret Wars is set to hit theaters on December 17, 2027.

Originally slated for May 1, 2026, the release was delayed due to strikes, first moving to May 7, 2027, and now pushed back again. This decision was made as both Secret Wars and its predecessor, Avengers: Doomsday, have expanded in scope.

Marvel has been busy with a slew of shows and films over the past year. However, the choice to take their time with the new Avengers films reflects careful consideration.

“When we were doing Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 3, there were [fewer] projects over more years,” Feige explained regarding the six-year gap between Avengers: Endgame and the next Avengers film. “They were smaller projects and individual character stories, and it felt appropriate at that point that after every two or three years that it took for a phase, we would do an Avengers film.”

During SDCC 2024, it was revealed that the Russo brothers will direct both Avengers: Secret Wars and its predecessor, Avengers: Doomsday.

This news thrilled fans, as the Russo brothers helmed two of the most acclaimed Marvel films, Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. If anyone can wrap up the Multiverse Saga with flair, it’s them.

“Joe and I truly believed Endgame was the end of the road for us,” Anthony Russo shared. “In the time since, through a special story, we have come to potentially see a road to take with you all.”

Since then, the Russos have been discussing the upcoming Avengers films, revealing key details that will shape the story ahead.

“What’s compelling about these two new Avengers movies is they’re a beginning. It’s a new beginning. We told an ending story, now we’re going to tell a beginning story. And then who knows where we’ll go from there. Maybe it’ll be another 5 years but I think we just needed that time and perspective to figure out where it needed to go next, and the only thing that brought us back was the right story,” Joe Russo said in an interview.

SDCC 2024 also confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. will portray Doctor Doom in Avengers: Secret Wars. Additionally, the Fantastic Four and the Thunderbolts will play significant roles in the upcoming Marvel film.

Expect to see Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Susan Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm. On the Thunderbolts side, Florence Pugh will reprise her role as Yelena Belova, alongside Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov, Wyatt Russell as John Walker, and more.

Aside from these two groups and Doctor Doom, no further casting announcements have been made yet. The 2015 Secret Wars comics, which the film is likely based on, also featured characters like Thor, Miles Morales, Peter Parker, Wolverine, Captain America, She-Hulk, and many others.

Several Marvel villains joined Doctor Doom in the comics, including The Beyonder, The Lizard, Magneto, Molecule Man, and Kang the Conqueror. Stay tuned for more casting announcements as they come.

There have been two major Secret Wars storylines in Marvel comics, the first launching in 1984 as part of a collaboration with Mattel to promote a toy line alongside a massive crossover event. This first Secret Wars is regarded as the inaugural official Marvel crossover event, with a 12-issue series showcasing the ultimate battle between the most powerful heroes and villains in the Marvel Universe.

The plot revolves around a villain named The Beyonder who transports heroes to a planet called Battleworld, where they are forced to fight against a horde of villains, with The Beyonder promising to grant the wishes of the winning side. Many heroes’ arcs are significantly altered, including Spider-Man, who acquires his iconic black suit that eventually becomes the living alien symbiote known as Venom.

While the original Secret Wars is beloved, the MCU appears to be drawing more from the 2015 comic run, which saw the destruction of the Prime Marvel Universe (Earth-616) as we know it. Essentially, The Beyonders—there are multiple—are attempting to collapse the Multiverse through Incursions, where universes collide and destabilize. They achieve this by manipulating Molecule Man, the only being who exists in the same context and identity across all worlds, serving as a failsafe whose powers can be activated to obliterate a universe.

However, Doctor Doom thwarts the Beyonders. Yet, in true villain fashion, Doom reconstructs Battleworld using elements from various universes, drastically altering many heroes in the process. Ultimately, the Avengers triumph and defeat Doom, who is known as God Emperor Doom.

We’ve already seen hints of this storyline being set up. In Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, Doctor Strange from Earth-838 causes an incursion, leading to the destruction of his universe and another. The Multiverse has been well-established through the Doctor Strange sequel and Spider-Man: No Way Home, which featured multiple versions of Peter Parker. This theme continued into Loki season 2 and The Marvels, and we suspect there’s more to come.

Additionally, Deadpool & Wolverine explored the instability of timelines within the multiverse, focusing on the destruction of universes outside the Sacred timeline and the TVA, which always seems to be dealing with universe-ending crises. Incursions and the multiverse are central to this narrative.

In the film, we also glimpsed a potential future where the Merc with a Mouth is held by Thor, suggesting Wade Wilson may have a more significant role in Secret Wars than initially anticipated.

It seems Secret Wars could signal the end of multiversal chaos, according to Kevin Feige. “We’re utilizing that [story] not just to round out the stories we’ve been telling post-Endgame, but just as importantly – and you can look at the Secret War comics for where that takes you – it very much sets us up for the future,” he stated in July 2025. “Endgame was about endings. Secret Wars is about beginnings… Reboot is a scary word. Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline – we’re thinking along those lines.”
