The team behind the sci-fi game Exodus, which channels the spirit of Mass Effect, understands the high expectations players have for epic RPGs. Narrative director Drew Karpyshyn acknowledges the pressure to deliver.

“We know there’s a hunger out there,” Karpyshyn shares. “As fans ourselves, we understand the anticipation for the next big title, and we see this as a chance to meet that demand. However, the pressure is immense, as players rightfully expect a lot from us, and we’re committed to meeting those expectations.”

Karpyshyn, who contributed to the first two Mass Effect games before transitioning to novel writing and returning to game development with fellow BioWare alumni at Archetype Entertainment, recognizes the weight of their legacy.

“It’s an incredible opportunity,” he states. “We have a high bar to reach, which is part of what makes game development challenging—the standard keeps rising with each great game that comes before. We need to elevate the experience.”

Game director Chris King adds, “As a gamer, I’ve found myself a bit bored over the years. Some franchises I used to love have lost their spark. Reflecting on last year’s games like Blue Prince, Clair Obscur, and Ghost of Yotei, I’m craving fresh, innovative experiences. I hope others are too. We believe we have a unique take on a sci-fi, open-world, space opera RPG, and I hope players will give us a chance to show them something different.”

The Mass Effect veterans are determined to ensure that side quests in their new sci-fi RPG feel integral, rather than just an afterthought, while also recognizing the challenge of balancing content without overwhelming players with an endless grind.
