Exciting News: Stargate Makes a Comeback!
Fans have been eagerly anticipating the return of Stargate for quite some time. The beloved sci-fi series last aired in 2011, with a brief web series making an appearance in 2018, leaving the franchise largely inactive for nearly a decade. Hopes were reignited when Amazon announced in November 2025 that Stargate would be making a comeback, with series veteran Martin Gero at the helm. However, that excitement was short-lived, as Amazon decided to cancel Gero’s reboot in June of this year. Now, there’s a renewed sense of optimism for Stargate’s future.
According to reports this summer, Amazon is actively seeking a new writer to lead the Stargate reboot. This is promising news for fans, indicating that Amazon remains committed to reviving the franchise despite the cancellation of Gero’s project. This aligns with earlier reports suggesting Amazon’s ongoing interest in expanding the Stargate universe.
It seems Gero’s vision for the reboot didn’t quite match Amazon’s expectations, as it was perceived to cater too heavily to the franchise’s most dedicated fans. With a background in Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Stargate Universe, Gero certainly had a deep understanding and passion for the lore established by previous series. In their search for a new writer, Amazon is reportedly looking for someone without prior ties to Stargate, aiming to bring a fresh perspective that could resonate with a broader audience.
While the Stargate franchise is primarily recognized for its numerous TV series, it all began with Roland Emmerich’s 1994 film, Stargate. The film featured James Spader and Kurt Russell as members of an Air Force team who travel to another world using the iconic sci-fi device. Three years later, Stargate SG-1 debuted, continuing the story from the film but recasting Russell and Spader’s roles with new actors. The series explored new planets through the Stargate and expanded the original film’s lore over ten seasons. SG-1 also led to two spinoffs, Atlantis and Universe, along with two direct-to-DVD films.
The most recent entry, Stargate Origins, was a web series released in 2018 but was quickly canceled due to a lack of positive reception. Amazon acquired the franchise with its purchase of MGM Studios in 2022 and has since been exploring new projects within the Stargate universe. Although Gero is no longer involved in the upcoming reboot, he will continue to work on other projects for Amazon as the company moves forward in its search for a new writer.
