If you’re heading to the movies this weekend, you might be in for a treat with a brand new Scream 7 trailer featuring a beloved character making a comeback.
While the studio hasn’t officially released the trailer yet, recordings from theaters have been making the rounds online. The new footage gives us another glimpse of Sidney and her daughter, whose lives are thrown into chaos as a new Ghostface killer targets Neve Campbell’s iconic character. In a quick moment, we catch a glimpse of what appears to be Matthew Lillard’s character, Stu Macher, on a computer screen.
You might be wondering, didn’t Stu die at the end of the first Scream movie? After it was revealed that Sidney’s boyfriend, Billy, and his best friend, Stu, were behind the Ghostface mask in the 1996 film, Sidney managed to outsmart them, getting her revenge by stabbing Billy and dropping a TV on Stu’s head. However, we never actually saw Stu’s body.
The new clip shows Sidney visiting a psychiatric hospital, where a patient has been creating unsettling drawings. Later, she receives a call, and we hear Lillard’s voice say, “Surprise, Sidney,” echoing Stu’s line from the original film. Could it be that Stu survived the TV incident and has been living in an asylum all this time?
Lillard’s return has been confirmed for a while, with the actor expressing his desire to reprise the role for some time. Fans speculated he might appear as a vision, similar to Skeet Ulrich’s cameo as Billy in the fifth film. However, judging by Lillard’s intense expression on the computer screen, it seems Stu has aged since we last saw him, indicating he is very much alive.
The new trailer also includes several Easter eggs, such as Sidney’s daughter tied to a chair with her mouth taped, reminiscent of Casey’s boyfriend in the first movie. Additionally, we see the daughter, played by Isabel May, wearing Sidney’s iconic leather jacket from Scream 2. This comes just days after director Kevin Williamson mentioned that the upcoming sequel would steer away from the meta-commentary that characterized the franchise.
Joining Campbell, Lillard, and May are Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Mason Gooding, and Jasmin Savoy Brown.

Scream 7 is set to hit theaters on February 27.
