“Expect High Casualties in Helldivers 2, Says Arrowhead CEO; Roadmap for Major Update Still Under Development”
Arrowhead Game Studios CEO Shams Jorjani has teased that the upcoming major update for Helldivers 2 is set to be quite impactful, though he’s not giving away much in terms of specifics. During a recent Q&A session on Discord, when a player requested a “tiny little hint,” Jorjani cryptically replied, “A lot of Helldivers will die.” This vague statement aligns with the game’s history, where player casualties are a common theme, leaving fans eager yet uncertain about what’s next.
Players are particularly curious about the game’s future, especially since the roadmap has become less clear. When asked about progress on this roadmap, Jorjani mentioned that it’s still being developed. “We are still discussing,” he stated. “We’d like to find a way to share quality-of-life updates and certain types of roadmaps while keeping story elements and other surprises under wraps.”
In response to concerns about Major Orders and significant narrative elements—one player even claimed the current Major Order is “mathematically impossible”—Jorjani clarified, “I’m not 100% familiar with the mission design, but as far as I know, we’ve never had an order that was mathematically impossible. Some have been designed to be VERY hard, and the community has often surprised us with their strategies.”
This reflects the evolving work of Helldivers 2’s dungeon master, Joel, and his team since the game’s launch. Jorjani’s comments about balancing transparency with mystery are particularly noteworthy. He likened their approach to that of a dungeon master in a roleplaying game, planning for various outcomes while keeping the exact path to the next big update somewhat ambiguous. “We know roughly where you’re gonna end up as we head into the next big update – but not the exact details. It’s very hard trying to keep development open-ended.”
