Expedition 33 Winner and BG3 Star Steps Back from Upcoming Role Due to Health Issues

Eclipse Glow Games has revealed that Jennifer English, known for her roles as Shadowheart in Baldur’s Gate 3 and Maelle in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, will no longer be voicing Gwendolyn, the lead character in Tides of Annihilation.

English was initially announced for the role during a State of Play event in February 2025. Shortly after, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 launched, earning her multiple awards for her performance as Maelle. However, on July 17, Eclipse Glow Games took to X to share that English had to step away from the project due to health concerns.

The studio’s post stated, “We have some sad news to share, that Jennifer English will be stepping away from her role as the English voice of Gwendolyn, the main protagonist in Tides of Annihilation due to personal health reasons. She will continue to support the project in an advisory role. Earlier in June, Jennifer informed us that she would no longer be able to continue in the role. While we were, of course, saddened by her decision, we completely understood and respected Jennifer in prioritizing her well-being. We are also deeply grateful for the care and responsibility she showed throughout this process.”

While English hasn’t provided further details on her social media, she remains involved in other gaming projects. She recently participated in a video showcasing Emberville’s cast and appeared at TennoCon, where she confirmed her role as the Empress of Eldveil in Soulframe. Eclipse Glow Games noted that she is assisting in finding a replacement actress for Gwendolyn.

Tides of Annihilation is part of a recent trend of Chinese action games like Black Myth: Wukong and Blood Message. However, this title leans more towards a Western fantasy inspired by Arthurian legend. Its gameplay draws from titles like Devil May Cry, featuring epic boss battles against giant foes reminiscent of Shadow of the Colossus. Attendees at Gamescom this year will have the chance to play a demo of Tides of Annihilation.

Eclipse Glow Games has announced that the new lead actress will be revealed during a public demo at Gamescom in August, but they have yet to disclose her identity. The impact of this change on Tides of Annihilation’s development timeline remains uncertain, as the game still lacks a release date.

When it does launch, Tides of Annihilation will be available on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
