Experience the Lord of the Rings Extended Editions in theaters with an immersive 4D experience!
Peter Jackson’s epic The Lord of the Rings trilogy is making a grand return to theaters in 2026, and this time, fans can experience it in Extended Edition format. Warner Bros. and Fathom Events have announced a special two-weekend event that promises to immerse viewers in the action using D-Box technology. Picture yourself being tossed around like a rider on an oliphaunt for over four hours while enjoying Return of the King in 4DX.
In celebration of the 25th anniversary of The Fellowship of the Ring’s theatrical debut, all three films—The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and Return of the King—will be shown on January 16-18 and January 23-25, 2026. If you’re eager to experience the D-Box Extended Edition versions, make sure to catch them during the first weekend. Tickets for these screenings are already available, but note that Fathom will spread the trilogy across three days, so you won’t be able to binge-watch for 11 hours straight in the theater. (You can always do that from the comfort of your own home.)
Alongside the anniversary celebration, there will be new merchandise to enjoy. This includes limited-edition concession vessels inspired by Middle-earth. At select AMC Theaters, fans can munch on popcorn from collectible map tins featuring a quest magnet set, while those at Regal and independent theaters can grab The Lord of the Rings Trilogy “One Ring” design vessels.
To keep the excitement alive until mid-January, you can dive into a year’s worth of stories about the making, reception, and legacy of Peter Jackson’s iconic adaptation with a collection titled The Year of the Ring. (It’s also available in book form.) Or, you can check out the short 25th anniversary hype trailer for next year’s re-release.
