Exploring Final Fantasy VII Revelation: 7 Key Insights on Airships, New FITS, and Queen’s Blood

Final Fantasy VII Revelation marks the grand finale of Square Enix’s ambitious remake journey. This installment will wrap up the epic saga of Cloud, Sephiroth, and their companions while inviting players into a world larger than ever before. Although the release is set for spring 2027, game director Naoki Hamaguchi has already revealed plenty about what players can anticipate.

Following the expansion of the world in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, players will venture beyond Midgard into a sprawling continent filled with new locales. Revelation takes this a step further, offering a genuine open world experience where players can explore the entire planet from the get-go. With Cid and his Highwind, players can soar across the skies, revisiting familiar spots and discovering new ones like Wutai and Rocket Town. The Highwind’s crew will transition smoothly from the airship to the ground using stylish parachutes, adding a fun twist reminiscent of popular battle royale games.

While the idea of a vast open world excites many, it can also feel daunting. To address concerns about the overwhelming scale of Rebirth, Hamaguchi has assured that the development team is focusing on creating a more streamlined experience in Revelation.

Cid Highwind and Vincent Valentine are the final two characters joining the party as permanent members. Vincent wields deadly claws and can transform into powerful beasts, while Cid uses his spear to launch devastating aerial attacks. Hamaguchi has mentioned that all party members will see their individual arcs conclude in Revelation, with Cid’s story featuring new elements that haven’t been explored before.

A fresh addition in Revelation is the FITS system, which introduces a fashion-based job mechanic reminiscent of the dressphere system from Final Fantasy X-2. This allows players to customize their party members’ abilities further. For example, equipping the black mage FIT will enable Cloud to enhance his sword strikes with magical attacks. All characters will have access to FITS right away once the system is unlocked, avoiding a slow rollout.

Queen’s Blood is set to be one of the most entertaining minigames in the remake trilogy. While players could challenge characters to matches in Rebirth, Gold Saucer will serve as the main hub in Revelation, featuring a new storyline focused on card battles. Additionally, the beloved snowboarding mini-game from the original FF7 will make its return, occurring after the events that concluded Rebirth.

In terms of minigames, Hamaguchi confirmed that a certain dreaded exercise mini-game from Rebirth will not be returning. “After creating two versions of the exercise mini-game, we feel that’s probably enough,” he stated.

Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth were initially released on PlayStation, with other platforms following later. Revelation, however, will launch simultaneously on the latest systems, including Switch 2. Hamaguchi emphasized that designing for a range of hardware, from lower-end to high-end systems, has not limited their creative vision. “From the start, we’ve designed game assets with various hardware specifications in mind,” he explained.

Chadley, the Shinra researcher, is back and will play a role in this final chapter. He’ll establish a base on the Highwind, focusing on researching the Weapons summoned by the planet to combat Meteor. While Hamaguchi hasn’t revealed the specifics of the battles against these Weapons, he hinted that they will be massive in scale. Players can expect to face Emerald and Ruby Weapons, though details on how these encounters will unfold remain under wraps. The underwater area where players first meet Emerald Weapon will also return, but it’s unclear if the battle will take place there or elsewhere.

As speculation swirls around how this trilogy will conclude, particularly with the introduction of multiverse elements and the handling of Aerith’s storyline, Hamaguchi reassured fans that the original vision for the trilogy’s ending remains intact. He is confident that Revelation will meet fan expectations as it draws the story to a close.
