Exploring the New Resident Evil Movie’s Place in the Game Timeline

This morning, Sony unveiled the first trailer for its upcoming Resident Evil movie, which takes a fresh approach rather than adapting any specific game storyline. The initial clip doesn’t showcase familiar faces like Leon Kennedy or Chris Redfield, nor does it delve into the Umbrella Corporation’s narrative. However, director Zach Cregger shared insights with an outlet about how the film will weave into the larger Resident Evil timeline when it hits theaters in September.

In a detailed 13-minute breakdown, Cregger discusses various shots from the trailer, his personal connection to the Resident Evil franchise, and his collaboration with Capcom on this new live-action installment. One of the key points he emphasizes is the film’s parallel timeline to the events of Resident Evil 2, featuring Austin Abrams as Bryan, a medical courier facing his own challenges while Leon and the gang are busy trying to save the world.

Cregger explains, “Basically my rule for this movie was to just try and make a film that felt like my experience of playing the game, one that could exist within the Resident Evil universe. I feel like this movie takes place alongside the events of Resident Evil 2. I like to think that everything happening in the police station could be occurring in this world. This is just another guy on another mission on the other side of town, dealing with his own issues.”

While it’s unclear how prominently Raccoon City and Leon’s first day as a police officer will be referenced, Cregger assures that the film’s timeline and setting are well-defined. He notes that both Sony and Capcom allowed him creative freedom, resulting in subtle nods to the franchise, like a Green Herb pot from Resident Evil 4 appearing in the background of one shot.

“I was very fortunate to have a studio and a production company that really supported me and never interfered with my vision,” he shares. “I know there are plenty of horror stories about filmmakers struggling with IP, but I didn’t experience that at all.”

Resident Evil is set to hit theaters on September 18.
