Fallout Season 2 Episode 1 Launches with Explosive Action

SPOILERS for Fallout Season 2 Episode 1: The Man Who Knew to follow: When we last left Lucy MacLean (Ella Purnell), The Ghoul aka Cooper Howard (Walton Goggins), and their trusty pup CX404, things were looking grim. Lucy had just uncovered that her father Hank (Kyle MacLachlan) was behind the destruction of Shady Sands, while The Brotherhood of Steel clashed with the New California Republic over Griffith Observatory. Cooper realized that Hank held the key to finding his family. As Hank slipped away to New Vegas amidst the chaos, Lucy chose to team up with Cooper in search of answers, leading them into perilous territory.

The premiere of Fallout Season 2, titled “The Man Who Knew,” kicks off with a brief flashback to the Pre-War era, showcasing a public protest against RobCo Industries. We then find ourselves in a bar where a mysterious figure (Justin Theroux) taunts a group of unemployed workers, claiming that Mr. House, the founder of RobCo, wields more power than the government. The scene escalates outside, where he implants a device in one worker’s head in exchange for a hefty sum. This device forces the man to attack his friends with a baseball bat, but when he turns on the stranger, the device causes his head to explode in a gruesome display.

Fast forward to the present, and Cooper is captured by the Great Khans in Novac. Just as they prepare to execute him, Lucy reveals herself from a classic sniper spot reminiscent of Fallout: New Vegas, exposing their plan to rob the Khans of their bottlecaps. After failing a dialogue check, chaos erupts, and Cooper steps in, showcasing once again why he’s one of the Wasteland’s top gunslingers. Following the skirmish, Cooper shares that New Vegas survived The Great War thanks to a missile defense system created by Mr. House, which intercepted the bombs. This includes a flashback where Cooper learns about Vault-Tec and House’s plans, all while trying to protect his daughter.

In Vault 33, Overseer Pearson (Leslie Uggams) reports that their water purification chip is malfunctioning. Meanwhile, in Vault 32, Stephanie Harper (Annabel O’Hagan) is adjusting to her new role as Overseer, managing the needs of her residents and newcomers from Vault 33. By her side is Chet (Dave Register), Lucy’s cousin, who is struggling with his new responsibilities as a stepfather and is less than thrilled about the idea of naming the child “Chet Jr.”

We then shift to Vault 31, where Norm (Moises Arias), Lucy’s brother, is imprisoned by the robo-brain of Bud Askins, a junior vice president of Vault-Tec, after discovering that the vault is secretly housing Vault-Tec executives from before The Great War. As Lucy and Cooper follow the trail of destruction left by Hank, they stumble upon the Starlight Drive-In, which conceals Vault 24. Inside, they find the vault door ajar and the interior overrun with vegetation. A flashback reveals Cooper reporting his Vault-Tec findings to Lee Moldaver (Sarita Choudhury), who led the NCR during the Griffith Observatory battle. Moldaver informs Cooper that her wife intends to sell Cold Fusion, an infinite power source, to Mr. House, which would make him incredibly powerful post-bomb drop. She implores Cooper to assassinate Mr. House, a mission that ultimately never materializes.

Back in Vault 31, Norm is weakening from starvation and dehydration. Bud offers him a way out by entering Hank’s now-empty cryo chamber. With little time left, Norm makes a desperate choice and awakens all the Vault-Tec executives from their slumber, causing a wave of chambers to open. As Lucy and Cooper explore Vault 24, they encounter numerous corpses and Russian propaganda, realizing the dead were Americans brainwashed into communism, likely a result of Vault-Tec’s twisted experiments. Deeper in the vault, they find a Great Khan equipped with a mind control device similar to the one used by the mysterious stranger earlier. He delivers a chilling message from Lucy’s father: “I fix everything. Go home, Sugar Bomb.” Before they can react, his head explodes in a shower of gore.

Meanwhile, Hank arrives at a covert Vault-Tec facility, swapping his stolen power armor for something more business-like. After savoring a fine cup of coffee, he records a message for an unknown recipient, vowing to continue his work. In a display case, the mind control device from the mysterious stranger is showcased alongside smaller, upgraded versions, closing out the episode.

Fallout returns with a bang! While we gained insights into the aftermath of the Griffith Observatory battle, the journey through the Mojave Wasteland raises even more questions. What are Hank’s true intentions? What fate awaits Norm with the Vault-Tec executives awakening? Why is New Vegas so crucial? Who is the enigmatic stranger behind the mind control device? And we still haven’t checked in on Maximus (Aaron Moten) and the Brotherhood of Steel. As we reunite with our heroes in this thrilling new chapter, there’s a wealth of mysteries waiting to be uncovered in Fallout Season 2.
