The Fallout TV series on Prime Video might be drawing inspiration from Fallout 4, particularly in the storyline involving Ghoul and Cooper Howard’s reunion with his family.
Warning: spoilers for the Fallout season 2 finale ahead.
“I think one of the intriguing aspects of the Fallout universe is the existence of cryo technology,” Robertson-Dworet shared when discussing whether Cooper Howard’s family is still alive. “This raises questions like, ‘Were they in cryo before she left the note? Are they in cryo again? What’s the timeline? How old would Barb be now? How long has she been out of cryo?’ We hope fans are pondering these questions, as the technology allows for various possibilities… Either she hasn’t aged at all, or she’s significantly older by the time the Ghoul finds her.”
In the finale of Fallout season 2, the Ghoul finally arrives at Barb and Janey’s cryopods, only to discover they are empty. However, inside Barbara’s pod is a postcard from Colorado with a note saying, “Colorado was a good idea.” Some fans expressed confusion over this moment, pointing out that Barb and Janey would begin to age once they left their cryopods. Currently, it remains unclear how long they spent in cryo, whether they entered new pods in Colorado, or if they emerged after a long period (be it 200 years or less) to allow themselves to age.
It’s possible that Barb has passed away and Janey is now an elderly woman… but it seems the show is echoing themes from Fallout 4. In that game, players control a character who wakes up after many years in cryo in Vault 111. Upon awakening, their spouse has been murdered, and their son, Shaun, has been kidnapped. The player must venture into the wasteland to find their son, who (spoiler alert) is now a fully grown man after leaving his cryopod. It’s quite likely that Janey will be the same age as her father, the Ghoul, when they finally reunite. Here’s hoping Fallout season 3 lands a release date in late 2027 or early 2028.
