Fans Celebrate Major Changes to Overwatch’s Battle Pass System
Overwatch is having an impressive year. Alongside the introduction of eight new heroes in recent months, a fresh update is set to revamp the shooter’s Battle Pass system, making it more accessible for players.
With the launch of Season 4 today, players will enjoy greater control over how they unlock cosmetics, the ability to swap skins, and a reduction in FOMO elements related to the game’s monetization. The Battle Pass is no longer strictly linear; it now features 80 tiers divided into shorter “tracks” that can be completed in any order. Each track consists of eight to ten tiers, culminating in either a Legendary or Epic skin. Chris McCabe, the game’s Product Director, noted that while the total number of tiers remains the same and the time to complete it is similar, players will have more agency over the rewards they earn.
The Premium Battle Pass introduces a new feature called the Tier Hack, allowing players to exchange one Legendary skin in the Pass for a different legacy skin from a curated selection. Additionally, in September, Blizzard will roll out the Legacy Battle Pass Unvault system, giving players a second chance to earn rewards from select expired Battle Passes. Once a player purchases the Pass (or if they already own an eligible one), it will remain permanently available. However, it’s important to note that “Unvaulted Passes do not include the original premium currency, Mythic Prisms, Prestige Titles, or Mythic Hero and Weapon Skins.”
The community is buzzing with excitement over these updates. One Reddit user expressed enthusiasm, saying, “I’ll finally be able to get that Zarya walking emote that I couldn’t get three years ago. Massive W.” Another user referenced a different game, stating, “Thank you, Marvel Rivals!” highlighting how that game allows players to permanently acquire Battle Passes they’ve paid for, likely influencing Overwatch’s new Unvault system.
Overwatch has emerged as a standout success within a struggling Xbox landscape. A leaked internal email recently described Blizzard as the “top-performing” studio at the company, largely due to Overwatch “delivering its strongest quarter since 2022.” The game’s accelerated release schedule is certainly a contributing factor, with D.Mon, the latest tank, debuting alongside Season 4.
