Fans Discover Method to Introduce Iconic Gen 2 Pokémon into FireRed and LeafGreen

A dedicated Pokémon fan group, MercuryEnigma, has discovered a method to create custom events in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. This breakthrough allows fans to design their own items or Pokémon and transfer them into the Gen 1 remakes. MercuryEnigma has shared a video detailing this experiment, and many fans are eager to learn how to replicate the process at home.

Since their release on the Switch and Switch 2 in February, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen have taken players on a nostalgic journey through the Kanto region. While some veterans revisited this classic, others experienced it for the first time. As players set out to catch ’em all and complete the Pokédex, they faced the limitation of their Pokémon being locked in these games. Fortunately, this is set to change with Pokémon Home support arriving in October, allowing players to transfer their Pokémon to other titles. Completing the Kanto Dex in FRLG will reward players with a Celebi in Pokémon Home.

A recently translated interview has shed light on Game Freak’s vision for the remakes.

However, once a Pokémon is transferred from FireRed or LeafGreen, it cannot return to its original game. Thankfully, Pokémon Home can access a game’s Pokédex without requiring any Pokémon transfers, enabling players to obtain Celebi without permanently moving all 150 Pokémon from the FRLG ports to Home. Some players had hoped for a two-way transfer system that would allow them to receive Celebi in FireRed and LeafGreen, despite its absence in the original titles. To address this, a team of fans devised a way to program custom events into the game via local wireless, making it possible to introduce Celebi or any other Pokémon into FireRed and LeafGreen.

According to MercuryEnigma, this process utilizes the Mystery Gift feature. By connecting a WiFi chip on a computer to unmodded Switch and Switch 2 consoles, they were able to emulate a connection with another console, allowing them to receive items or Pokémon from the emulator through Mystery Gift.

While this project is still in development, it has already shown promising results, with MercuryEnigma successfully obtaining a Level 50 event Celebi by the end of their video. Fans are hopeful that the group will continue to share updates and eventually provide a guide for others to follow. Many players are particularly interested in creating a custom event to unlock Mew, enabling them to finally complete the Gen 1 Pokédex.
