Fans Dub Barbie Dream Fest as ‘Barbie Nightmare Fest’ for Good Reasons

“If I can dream it, then I can do it; I’ve got my girls with me, there’s nothing to it,” Fifth Harmony declared in their official Barbie anthem, “Anything Is Possible.” Sadly, that sentiment didn’t hold true for those who attended Barbie Dream Fest, taking place in Fort Lauderdale, FL, from March 27-29. Fans are drawing comparisons to infamous convention flops like the Glasgow Willy Wonka Experience, DashCon, and Fyre Fest.

Mattel promoted the event as “the first festival dedicated to all things Barbie,” aiming to “explore the legacy, evolution, and boundless imagination of the Barbie brand.” They promised attractions like a “Walk-in Interactive Dream House,” an 80s disco roller rink, a marketplace, and a bike course. Instead, attendees encountered a cardboard cutout of a generic pink house with a small patch of turf for a “lawn” on a stark concrete floor, a “20×20 pen” for roller skating surrounded by metal barricades draped with lackluster banners, random vendors—including one from a window and door company—and a bike course marked off with cones that looked like they were borrowed from a local elementary school’s gym class, complete with unbranded pink bunting.

One attendee shared a particularly unflattering comparison of the event’s marketing versus reality on X, stating, “At one point I was comforting mothers who bought 3-day passes & flew from different states, booked hotels + rental cars.”

I was skeptical for a few months about the lack of official photos showing what the con would look like. In all the Barbie Dream Fest ads, it looked like this, and since it’s Mattel (a billion-dollar company), I thought they would deliver. Numerous posts on Reddit echo this disappointing experience:

While some of the comments and comparisons are undeniably amusing, many attendees left feeling disheartened after spending a considerable amount on tickets. Single-day adult passes, which are still available if you’re curious to witness this debacle in person tomorrow, start at $72, with three-day weekend passes priced at $152.50 and VIP packages ranging from $252.50 to $452.50, depending on the tier. One attendee who opted for the less-expensive VIP package lamented on Reddit, “$250 for no extra perks and all we received for merch included in that was a spray hand sanitizer.” Another attendee noted, “The coveted ‘swag bag’ for those who paid over $400 contained a plastic brush and hand sanitizer, no bag, no exclusive merch.” It’s also worth mentioning that Mischief Management, the company that collaborated with Mattel to organize Barbie Dream Fest, has a questionable track record with other disappointing conventions in the past, including Romance Con.

The one silver lining that fans have consistently highlighted is the special guests and speakers, who seem to be making the best of a tough situation. Even Serena Williams showed up to receive the “Icon Award,” whatever that entails. But for those who traveled and spent money to attend Barbie Dream Fest, the reality was a far cry from the marketing, much like the distance between Fort Lauderdale and Malibu.
