Fans Get Their Wish with New Avatar Movie Release, But It’s Not What They Hoped For

Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender has faced quite a few challenges over the past year. Initially set for a theatrical release, the animated sequel to the beloved Nickelodeon series was shifted to debut on Paramount+, and then it leaked online in its entirety back in April without any watermarks. Now, the film is set to premiere on Paramount+ next week on July 25, but many fans are still advocating for a proper theatrical release. After watching the movie myself, I can confidently say that its animation would shine on the big screen. It seems someone at Paramount has come to the same conclusion and is pushing for a limited theatrical run to qualify for awards season.

Reports indicate that Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender will have a week-long theatrical engagement in just two locations across the entire United States. The AMC Burbank Town Center 6 in Los Angeles and the AMC Empire 25 in New York City will host three showings a day from July 24 to 30. That adds up to around 42 screenings for those lucky enough to be near these theaters, while the rest of us will have to settle for watching it on our TVs and iPads at home. It’s frustrating, especially for those of us in New York City who feel for fans outside these select areas.

If these limited screenings sell out, perhaps someone at Paramount will realize the demand and consider a wider release. The animation is truly breathtaking, and I’d be tempted to catch it in theaters again just to experience it fully. Plus, I wouldn’t need much convincing to enjoy the film’s stunning visuals for a second time.
