Fate/Extra Record Remake Changes Developers After Studio Director Steps Down
The long-awaited remake of the PSP classic Fate/Extra Record for modern consoles seems to be back on track, thanks to a new development team and publisher stepping in after the previous studio, Type Moon Studio BB, announced a major restructuring. This shake-up includes the departure of its director following a challenging development period.
Since its announcement in 2020, the game has faced numerous hurdles, primarily delays. Initially slated for a 2024 release, it was pushed back indefinitely earlier this year when its original publisher withdrew support, leading to the cancellation of all Japanese pre-orders for this cult favorite. Recently, it was confirmed that Aniplex will replace the former publisher, with reports indicating that development has shifted from Type Moon Studio BB to Meteorise, the team known for the upcoming 2025 anime fighting game Bleach: Rebirth of Souls.
Fans of visual novels are likely familiar with the dark fantasy universe of Fate/Stay Night, which has spawned numerous adaptations and spin-offs across anime, video games, and manga, elevating Type Moon from a hobbyist group to a media powerhouse. Among these adaptations is Fate/Extra, a 2010 dungeon crawler for the PSP that received positive reviews upon release. In 2019, Type Moon established Type Moon Studio BB, led by Kazuya Nino, a former director at Square Enix and Atlus, with a remake of the beloved title as their inaugural project.
The announcement of a new publisher and developer coincides with significant restructuring efforts within the company to address ongoing challenges, including Kazuya Nino’s exit as studio director. In a statement shared on social media, Nino confirmed his departure, citing personal reasons. He expressed regret for not being able to see the project through to completion and requested his name be removed from the game’s credits, apologizing to fans eagerly awaiting its release.
He also conveyed his respect for the remaining development team and, while he won’t comment further on the game, reassured fans that the upcoming changes will align with their expectations.
The public acknowledgment of these development issues is quite rare in the Japanese gaming industry, and it remains to be seen if this will mark a turning point for the title. Additionally, old social media accounts and the official website for the game will be shut down on September 7th, with new updates on its status expected next month.
