FBI Ends Investigations into ICE Activities

Federal agents have been informed that the FBI will cease its investigations into incidents involving ICE agents, a shift that has been denied by the DHS and DOJ. This reported change comes amid increased scrutiny over recent violent encounters, including two fatalities attributed to ICE agents in the past two weeks. The incidents in Maine and Texas are part of a troubling trend of civilian deaths linked to ICE, with reports of agents attempting to intimidate witnesses following these high-profile cases.

The new directive would halt FBI inquiries into assaults against DHS agents. The government has been actively pursuing cases against protesters and individuals who have had even minor physical interactions with agents. However, many of these felony assault cases often collapse, with nearly half resulting in acquittals, dismissals, or withdrawals, as highlighted by an analysis.

While the FBI’s investigations are intended to bolster the government’s case against protesters, they frequently yield evidence that could be detrimental to the officers involved in future legal proceedings.

Under this new guidance, the responsibility for investigating incidents involving federal immigration officers would likely shift to Homeland Security Investigations, a division of ICE, which raises concerns about self-investigation. Since Homeland Security Investigations lacks the authority to probe civil rights violations, implementing this change could significantly reduce the likelihood of thorough investigations into shootings of unarmed individuals by ICE agents, leaving potential federal law violations unexamined.
