Filming for Severance Season 3 Kicks Off, but Fans Are Frustrated by the Wait
It looks like production on the third season of *Severance* is finally kicking off. Director Ben Stiller and showrunner Dan Erickson shared a quote on social media: “‘To return to work is to return home.’ – Kier Eagan,” along with a snapshot of Mark S. and Helly R. racing through the Lumon halls.
While this is promising news for fans of the hit series, the delay in starting production raises some eyebrows. The second season wrapped up on March 20, 2025, and a third season was announced the very next day. However, that quick confirmation didn’t translate into a swift production timeline.
This isn’t the first time *Severance* enthusiasts have faced a long wait. There was a staggering 35-month gap between the first and second seasons, so when Stiller was asked if fans should expect another three-year hiatus, he assured, “Definitely not. No, the plan is not, and hopefully, we’ll be announcing what the plan is very soon.”
Unfortunately, some quick calculations suggest that the wait for season 3 might be similarly lengthy. Stiller and Erickson noted that they spent 168 days filming the second season, which, accounting for breaks and weekends, totals about six months. Post-production and marketing took around eight months. If that timeline holds, we might not see season 3 until around September 2027. This would create a 32-month gap since the second season began, which, while slightly shorter than the 35-month wait between the first and second seasons, isn’t exactly a win. The long wait is even more pronounced since the second season’s delays were due to the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike, while the third season’s delays lack a similar explanation.
Fans have expressed their frustration over the news.
“Looking forward to watching it in 2029,” one user quipped on Reddit.
“This has to be one of the best yet hardest shows to root for. Crazy concept with amazing performances, yet good luck keeping people invested when it takes 2-3 years for a new season,” another commented.
Given the series’ intricate, layered mystery-thriller nature, it’s especially challenging to stay engaged during these long breaks. We’ll see if viewers flock back for *Severance* when it eventually returns, likely late next year.
In the meantime, there’s another fantastic option for fans of mind-bending sci-fi.
