Filming for the new Rambo origin movie featuring a Street Fighter actor kicks off this week.

Noah Centineo is on a roll this year. Alongside his promotion for Street Fighter, where he’s gearing up to portray Ken, and his role in Netflix’s mech-sized film Gundam alongside Sydney Sweeney, he’s now set to jet off to Thailand to kick off production on John Rambo. This prequel will delve into the origins of Sylvester Stallone’s iconic one-man army.

Filming is set to begin this week in Thailand, as reported, with Jalmari Helander, known for the Sisu films, directing. The screenplay, crafted by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani, will explore how Rambo first became the formidable force we know from First Blood.

Helander has demonstrated his knack for directing stories centered on a lone hero facing overwhelming odds, making him a fitting choice for this project. It’ll be intriguing to see if Centineo can wield a blade and bow like the original Rambo, who was infamous for his extreme survival tactics.

In a statement accompanying the teaser poster, Helander described the film as “Rambo stripped down, raw, and real—a survival story about endurance, persistence, and lost innocence.” He expressed his honor in shaping this new chapter with respect for the character and legacy, aiming to showcase the beginning of John Rambo’s journey.

In a more detailed overview, Helander shared insights about the film’s unique approach, emphasizing that it starts with a younger, happier Rambo. “What would happen to him? Why did he become that kind of dude that we’ve all seen in First Blood? So it’s different,” he explained.

Joining Centineo in this action-packed adventure are Yao from Sinners, Jason Tobin (Warrior, A Thousand Blows), Quincy Isaiah, Jefferson White (Yellowstone), and Tayme Thapthimthong (The White Lotus). While a release date hasn’t been confirmed yet, fans are eager to see how Helander, Centineo, and the team will bring the story of young John J. Rambo to life.
