Filming Update for Avengers: Secret Wars Sparks Delay Speculation
Just like the back-to-back releases of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame in April 2018 and 2019, Marvel is gearing up for another double feature with Avengers: Doomsday hitting theaters on December 18 and Avengers: Secret Wars set for December 17, 2027.
However, recent chatter has fans concerned that Avengers: Secret Wars might miss its December 2027 target. Reports suggest that principal photography for the film has been pushed to January of next year. Adding to the uncertainty, one of the film’s stars has indicated he won’t wrap up filming until next summer, leaving Marvel enthusiasts wondering if a delay is on the horizon.
On October 5, it was reported that Anthony Mackie, who portrays Sam Wilson/Captain America, will be taking on the role of Thane of Cawdor in Macbeth next year. Rehearsals are set to begin in February, with the play running through July. Mackie mentioned, “Once I finish on Broadway, I’ll go to finish up all the Avengers stuff for Secret Wars.”
If he doesn’t complete his scenes for Secret Wars until July 2027 at the earliest, that would mean the sixth Avengers film would still be in production just five months before its scheduled release—a pretty tight schedule. In contrast, principal photography for Doomsday wrapped up in September 2025, well over a year before its December 2026 debut. This is a stark difference from the production of Infinity War and Endgame, which were filmed back-to-back with only a brief break in between.
Thanks to the magic of filmmaking, it’s possible for Mackie to film his scenes next summer in a manner similar to how Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler) worked on Avengers: Doomsday—using green screen technology. Neither Marvel nor Disney has officially addressed the rumored delays for Avengers: Secret Wars. If everything goes according to plan, fans can expect to see it in theaters next December.
