Final Fantasy 14’s Free Access on Switch 2 is About to Conclude
All good things eventually come to an end. After a month-long grace period following the launch of Final Fantasy 14 on the Nintendo Switch 2, the subscription requirement for the game is being reinstated.
The announcement regarding the conclusion of the free subscription period was made in a post on the Lodestone blog. As previously mentioned, while players typically need just one Final Fantasy 14 subscription to access the MMO, playing on the Switch 2 will necessitate a second subscription. To help ease the financial burden, the game on Switch 2 won’t require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, and if you already have a Final Fantasy 14 subscription on other platforms, you’ll receive a 50% discount on the Switch 2 subscription price.
The free trial period for Final Fantasy 14 will officially end on Monday, Sept. 7 at 11:59 p.m. local time.
Adding to the complexity, subscriptions for the Nintendo Switch 2 cannot be purchased in the usual manner. Instead, players must buy FFXIV Coins from the Nintendo eShop, which can then be used on the Final Fantasy 14 Mog Station to manage subscription fees. FFXIV Coins can also be utilized to acquire optional items from the Final Fantasy 14 Online Store. While automatic subscription renewals can be set up on Switch 2, they will only function if there are sufficient FFXIV Coins in your account.
Players can enjoy 30 days of free play by purchasing and registering either the Starter or Complete Edition of Final Fantasy 14. Once that free period expires, a subscription will still be necessary. However, there is a way to continue playing for free on Switch 2. If you have never purchased any version of Final Fantasy 14, you can keep playing on the game’s free trial without needing a subscription. Despite the challenges on Switch 2, Final Fantasy 14 runs surprisingly well on the console, and for some, it might even be the best platform to experience this critically acclaimed MMO.
