Final Fantasy 7 Remake Director Prefers New Leadership for Potential Final Fantasy 6 Remake
Final Fantasy 7 Remake series director Naoki Hamaguchi has expressed that while a remake of Final Fantasy 6 would be a dream project for him, he believes it might be better suited for another developer to tackle.
When discussing the best Final Fantasy game, fans often cite either 6 or 7 as their favorites (though many would argue for Tactics). Hamaguchi, who has deep ties to both titles, previously mentioned that it would be “very cool” to remake Final Fantasy 6. However, after dedicating nearly a decade to the Final Fantasy 7 project, he feels it might be best for someone else to lead a potential remake of 6.
In a recent conversation, Hamaguchi shared, “I have received a lot of voices from fans to make a Final Fantasy 6 remake.” He elaborated, “Having been involved in the Final Fantasy 7 remake for about 10 years from start to finish, I’m finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Given the time I’ve invested in this project, I wonder if I should be the one to take on another remake.”
He continued, “Instead of leading another remake, I would prefer to support a new creator and cheer them on from the sidelines.”
When asked if Final Fantasy 6 influenced his approach to remaking Final Fantasy 7, Hamaguchi reflected on how the former was a significant part of his childhood and shaped him as a gamer. He noted, “As a game creator, you can see how that influence comes through in my work.” However, he clarified that since they are adhering closely to the Final Fantasy 7 script, there wasn’t a deliberate effort to incorporate themes or elements from Final Fantasy 6 into the new series.
In related news, the original director of Final Fantasy Tactics admitted he “underestimated” the popularity of The Ivalice Chronicles, which has now surpassed 1 million copies sold, with hints of future updates on the horizon.
