Final Fantasy 9 Animated Series Set for 2028 Release, While JRPG Remake Remains Unannounced
The animated series based on Final Fantasy 9, once thought to be shelved, appears to have found new life with a different production company, aiming for a 2028 release.
Initially announced in 2021, the series was in development at Cyber Group Studios, a French company known for creating a series based on Mini Ninjas. Unfortunately, Cyber Group Studios shut down earlier this year, which many believed would spell the end for the Final Fantasy 9 project.
However, recent reports from a French magazine indicate that the series is now back in production at Euro Visual. This new iteration will be a 2D animated show consisting of 13 episodes, each running for 22 minutes. The storyline will follow six Black Mages, who are the offspring of Vivi, one of the game’s beloved protagonists.
Details from RPG Site suggest that this plot aligns with previously leaked information about the series, including a similar synopsis and key art for “Final Fantasy 9: The Black Mages’ Legacy,” which features six Black Mages, one of whom is frozen, echoing both the leaks and the official narrative.
While this development is likely unrelated to the much-speculated Final Fantasy 9 remake, the revival of the animated series gives a glimmer of hope that we might finally see that long-awaited remake in the near future.
In celebration of Final Fantasy 9’s 25th anniversary, a producer from Nier reminisced about how he believed “they should have made the loading faster.”
