Final Fantasy XIV’s Next Expansion, Evercold, Set to Launch Within a Year

Final Fantasy XIV’s upcoming expansion, titled Evercold, is set to launch in January 2027. The announcement was made during Fan Festival 2026, where a cinematic trailer was unveiled, offering a glimpse into the expansion’s storyline and introducing some of the characters players can expect to encounter.

The Evercold trailer kicks off with a dazzling display of magic, showcasing the Shards—FFXIV’s term for different worlds—and The Fourth. While the concept of exploring various Shards and time periods isn’t entirely new to the game, it has gained prominence in the narrative during Dawntrail and its subsequent patches. The Warrior of Light, referred to as the Traveler, descends “from the sky” alongside Estinien and Alphinaud, embarking on a mission to rescue a world ensnared in ice. This isn’t a rehash of Heavensward’s Coerthas; instead, players will delve into a fresh world facing its own unique challenges, including malevolent mages and what appear to be crystal-powered automatons.

According to FFXIV producer Naoki Yoshida, this new realm is described as a “Reflection fallen into ruin, ravaged by ever-spreading ice.”

Yoshida noted that Evercold is part of what the team has dubbed the Godless Realm saga, marking the second chapter of an epic journey that began with the 2024 Dawntrail expansion. Dawntrail was always intended as a bridge to transition the MMO from Endwalker into new territory, and this is the first time the saga has been officially named.

Typically, announcements regarding expansion release dates come closer to launch, but Yoshida expressed confidence in Evercold, prompting the early reveal. While he refrained from disclosing further details about Evercold’s narrative during Fan Fest, he hinted that the story of FFXIV 7.5 will lay the groundwork for the transition to Evercold when it launches next week.
