Final Hotfix for Destiny 2 Postponed Due to Sony Layoffs Impacting Development Team

Destiny 2’s final update dropped earlier this month, marking Bungie’s last major effort to polish its long-standing loot shooter before moving on. However, numerous balance issues and lingering bugs still need attention, and time is running short for the studio to tackle them. The latest hotfix has been postponed due to layoffs affecting some of the team members involved.

In a recent update, Bungie announced, “This week’s TWID, and next week’s patch planned for Tuesday, have been delayed. We will provide more information when we can.” Fans took this as a glimmer of hope, interpreting it as a sign that the patch isn’t canceled, though it leaves uncertainty about the timeline and whether all intended fixes will still be implemented.

One player on the Destiny subreddit expressed concern, saying, “I have a rather unfortunate suspicion that this will be one of those ‘delays’ that last forever.” However, a game representative reassured players in a follow-up comment that this is merely a temporary hurdle. “We will get this out when possible,” they stated. “A handful of fixes in this delayed patch were from impacted team members. When this ships, please show love to the team, past and present.”

With nearly 300 developers affected by the recent layoffs at Bungie, it’s unclear who remains to work on the hotfix. Even some developers involved with Marathon and internal support at Sony Interactive Entertainment were part of this week’s cuts.

While Destiny 2 fans are eager to see improvements in a game they’ve dedicated years to, many are frustrated that Sony chose not to greenlight a Destiny 3 while continuing to invest in Marathon. The timing of these layoffs feels particularly abrupt, as they come on the heels of Bungie’s earlier promises for future expansions.

At the beginning of 2026, Bungie was still committed to delivering new content for Destiny 2. However, by spring, likely following a lackluster launch of Marathon, plans shifted dramatically. The final content update in early June and the subsequent layoffs were part of Sony’s strategy to implement cost-cutting measures before the next fiscal quarter, leaving developers seemingly working on fixes for Destiny 2 right up until their layoffs were announced.
